I think something that really makes Odile's characterization work for me is that she's not straight-forwardly the character archetype of "starts out cold and rude and is revealed to have a soft side later" since her aloofness is more about her having difficulty expressing her emotions, or expressing her care in unconventional ways.

Even early on she makes jokes e.g. when you analyze the toxic yuri Sadness after one of them dies, she says "This is what love does to you." or her comment about how the party are allies at best which can defenetly come across as distant and jaded but Isabeau picks up that she's just joking around. And all around she's just a surprisingy light-hearted person for the kinda impression you get from her.

And obviously there's late game stuff like the Sus Event where she presses Siffrin on what's going on, and I can see why Siffrin freaks out being questioned by her, even his personal issues aside. She comes off very strong but her questions clearly still come from a place of concern.

What makes all of this even more intruiging is that SASASAP Odile does kinda fall into the archetype. She's still considerate of Loop and tells them to tell her just one small thing that bothers them in the True Ending, but during one of the breaks she also says "Leave me alone, I met my nice quota for the day." which feels kinda unnatural and isn't something I can see coming from ISAT Odile if it's not a joke. Which kinda loops back to my thoughts on how early iterations of ISAT play into the "found family with nuclear family roles" trope which ISAT subverts.

deranged twink that fell in love with the guy trying to steal top secret government info from him and now they’re in a loving relationship. he’s going to die of a brain hemorrhage (possibly????) in six-ish years. there’s an evil version of him that cyberbullied his boyfriend but a little bit to the left. he’s the brains of the time travel organization that he, his boyfriend, his boyfriend’s friend that has killed said boyfriend before, and two of his coworkers. he killed two versions of his boyfriend to save one. he can’t eat gluten. he can’t stop saying the wildest shit. he has a thing for cowboys and it becomes a central theme of the plot. the first description we ever get of him is “he’s a twink, i don’t need to explain what a twink is, you know, i know, blond twink at the desk”. he and his boyfriend call each other gross and sappy pet names that make everyone want to puke up their guts. he’s even left handed.

Literally the first time he's introduced he's first described as being a twink. He's also first described to be a relatively normal person but as the show goes on it turns out he's actually a little bit deranged, he claims that iterations (time travel duplicates) of people are no different than the "original" person yet is weirdly willing to kill iterations of his boyfriend whenever necessary. He and his boyfriend do have a healthy relationship however, and it's maybe even TOO healthy as they are disgusting and annoy everyone around them with their love. He met said boyfriend because he worked at a front desk at a top secret government facility and this guy manipulated him into sharing top secret codes with him. He is aware of this and they are in a loving relationship regardless and we know from future iterations of his boyfriend that they are going to continue to be gross and in love untill he drops dead in eight years from a brain hemorrhage. That's right! He's not just a deranged twink! He's a doomed twink! An iteration of Edgar found out that he was going to die in eight years and as a result he decided he'd turn to cyber bullying an iteration of himself and his boyfriend in an attempt to turn all of his friends against him. He even got axe murdered inside a wall one time! He thinks cowboys are hot and as a result the future widowed iteration of his boyfriend is now a cowboy.

12 Days of Aniblogging 2024, Day 2

Zeta Gundam has a real lurching, strange start by design. In the time between the One Year War and the Gryps Conflict, things have gone terribly! Not only did a good amount of Zeon’s forces escape to the asteroid belt and start rebuilding, the Earth Federation is getting taken over from within by the ruthless Titans. But wait, the Titans are still feddies at the end of the day, so why are they the ones piloting Hizacks and other Zeon-style designs at the start of the show?

The answer to this is brilliant and sadly relegated to a narrative footnote. You see, after the One Year War, Zeonic’s personnel and blueprints got absorbed into Gundam manufacturer Anaheim Electronics, as part of an Operation Paperclip-style deal. This leaves Anaheim's mobile suit aesthetics during the interwar period a total hodgepodge, iterating on both GM and Zaku style designs while also moving forward with plenty of secret prototype successors to the RX-78 Gundam. Maybe it’s just the OL in me, but this particular era and company really pique my interest! The culture shock and office politics that would follow from Anaheim folding in the engineers from the other side of the last war, the competition between rival design teams, the back-channel deals of an arms manufacturer now compelled to play both sides…

I’d been told that the Gundam OVA entitled Stardust Memory was vaguely about this, but I’d also been told that Stardust Memory was terrible and just plain not worth watching, so I steered away from it. Instead, my prayers were answered in the form of a lovely 2009 yuri doujin visual novel called Anaheim Girl’s Love Story.

First things first, I would like to simply acknowledge the joy of being alive, and alive at this exact moment in time. It is so wonderful that a group of dedicated fans made a complete visual novel starring lesbian office workers at the Mecha War Crime Engineering Company. And not only did they realize this dream in the first place, a separate group translated the script into English in 2013, and then another team reverse-engineered the game’s engine and released a patch in 2020 so that now the translation can be experienced in its original format. Each and every one of you is a true yuri warrior.

Anaheim Girl’s Love Story is a passion project through and through, extrapolating from all the bits and pieces of lore we get about Anaheim Electronics across various shows and crafting a believable setting, while still making it feel like a Gundam story on some level. It’s also fully voice acted? I don’t know what typical doujin VN production values were like in 2009, but still, color me impressed. We play as Rinne, a new recruit to Anaheim and a mecha otaku through and through. She loves these mobile suits, just like you and me! And she wants nothing more than to work for the company who invented the Gundam. Anaheim is a tech company through and through – most of the workers on the ground really believe in what they’re doing and put their whole heart into it, even as their leadership takes on increasingly shady and secretive contracts. But it’s also implied, in the VN and in the Gundam shows, that the company is staffed by mostly women. Great! I really do like when a setting asserts that being invested in mecha is primarily something that women do. After all, girls were the ones that kept 0079 popular in the first place according to Tomino.

All of the Anaheim girls have pale blue double-breasted suit jackets and long pencil skirts, culminating in an extremely 80’s look. AGLS also covers its blurry background photos with a dark blue filter, resulting in a fairly monochrome game where the character expressions really pop out from everything else. The mecha CGs are surprisingly well done, even if they suffer a bit from 2000’s shading syndrome, when everyone went a little too hard on the airbrush. The character portraits holds up a lot better in comparison. All of this to say that the presentation is fairly minimal, as they were clearly working with limited resources, but it gets the job done.

Rinne likes milk tea and is equal amounts excited and anxious about her job. This is the sort of milquetoast relatable protagonist traits you’d find in any dating sim, so the fun twist here is that when she’s feeling down about her work, she’ll go to the hanger where an RX-78 (the RX-78? It’s left unclear) is being stored and start talking to it. Rubber-ducking your mobile suit designs with an actual mobile suit is cute!! Things unfold as you’d expect, with Rinne befriending her hacker kouhai, starting a rivalry with the office villainess, and getting intimidated by her boss Sophie. It’s nothing revolutionary, but that’s fine, because the setting alone does a ton of the lifting. While no named characters from any official Gundam series appear, they’re namedropped ever so occasionally, and there’s plenty of cameos and lore sprinkled about for a Universal Centuryhead to lap up.

Of course, Rinne invites her boss over for dinner a bunch and discovers her soft and vulnerable side, and the two of them engage in a slowburn office situationship while trying to also trying to win the Gundam Development Project, an internal competition to develop next-generation experimental mobile suits. And wouldn’t you know it, office politics are afoot. She’s been keeping it from Rinne, but Sophie was originally an engineer from Zeonic. Trust issues ensue, as do complicated feelings about being in love with someone who designed the weapons that nearly killed you. The leadership of Anaheim has a clear bias towards Federation-style suits, and still views the Zeonic hires with scorn and suspicion, even if they bring useful perspectives in design philosophy. Sophie wants to design every part with cost and performance in mind! That’s what enabled the Zakus, after all. But if we skip ahead and look at the results, the end goal of this intra-office competition seems to have been extravagance bordering on wastefulness. Rinne and Sophie’s team produce a fairly standard but combat-versatile Gundam, while the other teams contributed a hyper-flexible Gundam, a hilariously overinflated mobile armor that you can stick a Gundam into, and a Gundam with a fucking nuke attached to it.

Most romance VNs and stories in general have some sort of last-act plot development that threatens to end things so the couple can bounce back and have a narrative climax. Sickness, family, trauma, a breakup feint, really anything is fair game. Anaheim Girl’s Love Story pulls out the most brutal one yet – “Stardust Memory happened”. It turns out that Anaheim has been playing both sides of the emerging Delaz conflict, and was planning on giving your team’s ship to a particularly unhinged Zeon commander as a gift of goodwill and temporary alliance. In doing so, they dismantle the iconic Gundam armor from the mobile suit frame, replacing it with a new and undeniably Zeonic red outer shell. It’s a genuinely fucked-up moment! To see your child ripped away from you and corrupted into being the other kind of war crimes monster, and your boss/girlfriend knew this was going to happen and was too ashamed to tell you. Rinne runs out of oxygen while trying to stop the Gebera Tetra from deploying, and falls into a coma afterwards. By the time she wakes up, the events of Stardust Memory have all played out, and things are in the process of returning to normal. Our protagonist ends up on a research vessel to Jupiter to test cutting-edge mobile suits, but promises to meet up with Sophie again when she returns. One wonders if she got recruited into joining Paptimus’ crew while on Jupiter, and was subsequently killed by Kamille. The timelines just barely overlap to make it possible!

Anyways, that’s Anaheim Girl’s Love Story. I’m not sure how fleshed out the hacker girl’s route is, or if there are different endings I could have gotten on mine. Maybe I’ll give it another shot next year. This game is by no means amazing. It is on some level just a softcore lesbian eroge with a Gundam coat of paint. But the delicacy with which it fits itself into the UC chronology without messing things up or being a fully irrelevant plot, the care put into having these ladies fall in love and do the usual OL yuri rituals, the honesty with which it carries itself… I’m so charmed by it all. I don’t know if I’d recommend it outright (you’d want to already be very invested in this slice of Gundam, and you need a VM with an older version of Windows to play it, and I think the website linking to the patch went down earlier this year), but I’m so happy that this exists in the first place and that I got to play it.

What I am less happy about is that this visual novel made me trick myself into watching Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. This is entirely on me, mind. Most lesbians are fooled into watching Stardust Memory because they saw images of Cima Garahau online, but I was ready for that trick. No, I genuinely wanted to fill in the finer plot details of the 6.5/10 visual novel I just played. Oopsies.

I am a newer YOI fan (December 2023), but wow I fell so deeply in love with these 12 episodes. I relate to Yuuri so much as a character, and I'm happy there is an art form, some way I am able to pay tribute to the show. Getting to know these characters helped me get to know myself better.

There were literal blood, sweat, and tears that went into finishing this Eros costume for Fanime 2024. It is by no means in its final iteration, and I can't wait to see what else I can do to perfect and improve it.

It was so wonderful to see everyone's reactions at the convention, the genuine joy and elation to see YOI cosplayers in 2024, the commiserating about the movie cancellation. 🥹

I'm so grateful I was able to cosplay with this group of wonderful friends to pay homage to a show we all love so dearly, and I can't wait to do it again.

i wantchu to know my only experience with iterator shpping to this point has been Pebbles/Suns (i guess. whats even the name for that one? idk). But you have opened my eyes here. Lilypad is just so compelling in a way thats hard to describe. Adds so much depth to the whole Hunter Slag Keys thing!

ANYWAYS. YES. Lilypad is so so so good…I really like it because Sig seems to actually be a little more emotionally vulnerable with Moon than she does Suns, implying they were closer than Sig and Suns are. Not to mention, Sig barely mentions Pebbles (or acts pretty standoffish) when he does mention Pebbs.

These are two messages it sends to Moon, but it seems to imply he’s sent more, considering “it’s me again” and the fact that there are more than one we are shown. They could have only made one just to show he was worried, but the devs chose to put more than one, just to drive the point home. It shows a panic that Sig is unwilling to reveal to Suns.

And then we have this.

Sig is basically telling Pebbles he hopes he wallows in regret for this. While Sig does express her general disdain for Pebbles’ attitude with Suns, he still makes a point to be understanding, saying “I think a lot of us were like that in the beginning.” Meanwhile, in this broadcast, none of that empathy is present. She is angry, to a point he refuses to reveal to Suns.

I believe that Sig’s biggest fear is being alone. He describes their situation as being “locked up in a box”, and comes up with the idea to use slugcats as messengers in an attempt to make sure when the comms systems degrade, something everyone else seems to have just accepted as a grim inevitability. So it’s pretty understandable Sig would be pissed at the person who took away one of the few remaining friends she had left. If you wanna read my other massive essay that goes more in depth to this point, here it is!

The fact that you can find the green overseer in outer expanse and subterranean during the Hunter, Monk, Survivor, and Gourmand campaigns is also shows how desperate she was to help Moon. If it was only around during the Hunter campaign, okay sure, that’s probably just him looking for her, checking if she made it to the void sea. However, the fact that it stays, likely long after she knows Hunter’s time is up, means he’s probably searching for any sign of activity from Moon. Still waiting and wondering if her plan was all in vain. The reason I think it doesn’t appear during Rivulet is because of the destruction of OE and just…age. Unfortunately, Sig might just not have the ability to send an overseer that far.

Lastly, the pearl he gives to Moon. This seems to contradict my first point, doesn’t this seem like he’s hiding her emotions behind humor again? Well, my interpretation of this is that: Moon just woke up from what is essentially a fucking coma. Giving her a message that’s like “OH MY GOD I WAS SO WORRIED ABOUT YOU AHHHHHH” would probably not be helpful to someone who is likely in a ton of pain, disoriented, and scared. She knows not to overwhelm Moon right now.

And…yeah. Sig seems to hold a lot of genuine adoration for Moon, and looks up to her kindness. I think his jokiness stems from him wanting to emulate Moon’s uplifting nature. He cares about her a lot and also I just love doomed yuri LMAO. SIG AND MOON LESBIANS FOREVER AND EVER.

I wondered where Narita had gotten himself too. Did he get assigned a different class to start the semester? Either way, he's one of the few who'd both not be surprised by Koga's rizz and isn't attracted to her in that way so not getting his reaction at the time is probably fine.

After all, he understood Koga's allure to others more than Aya from the very start.

Since I can see into the future (pages) it's now established it's been exactly one month since Koga went viral for her video. Then a day or two after going viral was when she thought everyone had forgotten again only to be ambushed by that jerk face. About a week later she returned to school as this fully actualized Koga-san.

So this current state of things at school has now been going on for at least a couple weeks.

Aya and Narita is aware of the situation. Koga is...um.

As it's been established, Koga's animal form is an Akita who is loyal to one person. She is just blah blahing about music to Aya and not aware or caring of any attention outside of that.

Once again if Koga had even a hint of what was going on in Aya's head at times...

I'm not really worried about it being a love triangle or anything like that. Koga has her special interests in only two subjects: music and Aya. They are way too absorbed with each other. There is no space.

I think Aya will have a chance to reflect (a kick in the butt) from meeting someone who sees Koga as her Oshi the traditional way...and realize how far over the Oshi or even friend line her own feelings have gone.

Before now introspection in this direction wasn't a rush because she had Koga all to herself and Koga's issues were the big focus most of the time. But this current Koga has that musician energy that attracts others and Aya has to finally decide if what she wants is to be more than just her first or biggest fan.

Hopefully Koga lets her know exactly what space she gets to take up too. She's kinda said more on that recently, but Koga probably has at least one more grand gesture in her.

This feels like the third iteration of this movement forward for them. One for each volume. And Agu said a phase was ending and this is the next. So let's take this thing from School of Rock to Yuri is My Job.

unfortunately, for a cliff side palace, the only exit to the ocean is through the lab (the excuse was that liv needed easy access to more materials) so liv nd luce meet more and more often as luce keeps trying to sneak out to the sea

It's unique because it's a betrayal that's done "selflessly" (at least from Homura's POV) for the sake of the person being betrayed"

after an entire manga of trying to defeat demons to save humanity together, including having akira fuse with a demon to be strong enough to defeat them, ryo regains memories he didn't know he lost and is revealed to have been on the side of the demons all along, and everything has been part of his plan to eradicate humanity. and ryo had akira become the titular Devilman in order for him to be able to live on in that world of demons he wanted to create, because he loves him (yes, canonically). naturally akira won't stand for that, and they fight to the death and it's all very tragic.

but i suppose a specific betrayal scene in this context is that ryo broadcasts akira's part-demon nature on tv to use him to make humans all kill each other out of fear that anyone could be a demon?

anyways it's very iconic, if there's a morally dubious/secretly on the opposing side gay guy in love with the protag in a piece of jp media since 1974, there's like an 90% chance it was directly or indirectly inspired by devilman. lelouch from code geass? ryo. kaworu from nge? ryo. komaeda from danganronpa? ryo.

How I feel about this character:

Love her! I think despite fainting twice, she took her boss trying to kill her and finding out about mutants really well. I really adore her character progression and how by like the back half of season 1, the turtles and Splinter were already family to her.

I think those would've been cuuuute!!

Heh, well... *looks at my blog* Totally normal about what capril could've been in this show. Definitely normal about it, definitely haven't drawn like dozens and dozens and dozens of pieces and written many words for these two. (Also, sunpril is very cuuute, wish we saw more of you Sunita!!)

My non-romantic OTP for this character:

I like her dynamic with her turtle bros a lot!! BUT!! I ADORE how much Splinter favors her as a pupil it's sooooo Wonderful!

My unpopular opinion about this character:

Official advertisement of her character boiled her down to the sassy black girl stereotype. Not so much unpopular opinion as it is something I noticed when the show was first being advertised and one of the things that made me not want to watch it. Rise follows a lot of cartoon shows' problem of leaning on stereotypes to convey their characters a certain way and it's UHHHH Not Great

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

As with 03 April, I would've love love Loved more Rise April-centric episodes!! Wanted them to dig deeper on her insecurities and potential growth because we All Know that S2 was cut in half and destroyed all those possibilities. UmU And again! Also, more duo episodes with her and all her bros and Splinter and meeting her parents and more stories with Sunita and ouuuuuhgghh if we'd gotten an ep with her and Casey as like Allies the show would've had my whole heart. Instead, my whole heart goes out to what the fandom has concocted they could've been.
